Helping Students Improve Citation Performance
Nienhaus, Brian
Business Communication Quarterly, v67 n3 p337-348 2004
During the author's final year in graduate school, he began teaching business communication. Without much forethought, he asked students to write a report with a sources requirement. When students turned their reports in, he learned that they were worlds apart on the practice of citing such sources. As a student in a rarefied academic environment, he wrote with proper citations. His students did not. He spent classroom time discussing citation practice but their performance did not improve. In this article, he describes an approach to citing sources in a business context that has improved students' performance. He also presents reasons for citing and talks about citation style.
