Orientation through Presentation: Getting MBA Students Interested in Communication Training
Connor, Michael
Business Communication Quarterly, v68 n4 p488-492 2005
The recent "Business Communication Quarterly" special issue on management communication instruction in internationally oriented MBA programs draws attention to a delicate and pervasive problem. Debby Andrews pointed out that whereas acknowledgment of the importance of communication skills for management is commonplace, curricula dedicated to building them is not. Getting MBA students interested in communication programs may need a "stealth strategy," such as making it "look less like communication instruction." Jaba Mukjerjee Gupta also agreed that "it is not always easy to convince students that communication instruction belongs in serious management education." This article describes the strategies adopted by the faculty members at Nanyang Business School in Singapore to get MBA students interested in communication courses.
