Learning to See What's Invisible: The Value of International Faculty Exchange
Sisco, Lisa A.; Reinhard, Karin
Business Communication Quarterly, v70 n3 p356-363 2007
The Alan Shawn Feinstein Graduate School at Johnson & Wales University (J&W), located in Providence, Rhode Island, and the Berufsakademie, University of Cooperative Education (BA), located in Ravensburg, Germany, have established an exchange program in which faculty from each institution travel abroad for brief guest teaching visits. In April 2006, Lisa A. Sisco, a communications professor in the MBA program at J&W, traveled to the BA for a 1-week visit to lecture students about strategic communication. Her German colleague, Karin Reinhard, visited J&W in October 2006, delivering lectures to MBA students in the area of Internet marketing. This article presents narratives of their cross-cultural teaching experiences. The teaching-abroad experience has clearly helped Dr. Sisco to better understand cross-cultural differences, which she believes is the first step toward building on the similarities. The experience has also created exciting possibilities for cross-cultural research and continued faculty collaboration. Dr. Reinhard has gained important benefits from this cross-cultural experience as well. She has gained insight into a different educational system and students, which has given her ideas about ways to improve her work. In addition, she is most excited about the options to link with her American colleagues for future joint projects and research.
