Japanese Family and Consumer Sciences Teachers' Lived Experiences: Self-Disclosure in the Classroom
Katadae, Ayako
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v100 n1 p64-70 2008
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences of Japanese family and consumer sciences teachers' self-disclosure in the classroom. Twelve secondary school teachers were interviewed, beginning with this primary question, "Think about a specific time and space when you self-disclosed in the classroom. Would you tell me your experience in concrete terms as far as possible?" Essential themes identified were: (a) becoming the center of attention, (b) connecting with students, and (c) hearing students' babble of voices. The essential themes will contribute to deeper understanding of self-disclosure and will help current and prospective FCS teachers who wish to explore their pedagogy.
