Undergraduate College Students, Laptop Computers, and Lifelong Learning
Tan, Chong Leng; Morris, John S.
Journal of General Education, v54 n4 p316-338 2006
Many universities and colleges list the development of lifelong learning skills as a curriculum objective and have adopted laptop programs that may enable lifelong learning. The purpose of this research is to address the effectiveness of a technology-based and computer-mediated learning environment in achieving lifelong learning skills from the learner's perspective. A survey of upper-division undergraduate participants in a laptop program is used to develop a metric for measuring lifelong learning and subsequently to gauge the impact of the laptop on the achievement of this curriculum objective. This research reports results from an initial survey that will be readministered each semester of this program to monitor longitudinal changes in laptop usage behavior and track success at achieving lifelong learning outcomes. The results provide considerable support for the justification of providing a ubiquitous computing environment for students in a university program. (Contains 8 tables and 1 figure.)
