America's Children at an Environmental Crossroad

Few issues have galvanized the attention of U.S. citizenry in the past year as have environmental concerns, especially climate change, global warming, and greenhouse gas emissions. Degradation to our fragile planet continues unchecked with only limited actions on a national level. Children who absorb these concerns through television, classroom conversations, (hopefully) science lessons, and their own explorations on the Internet have seriously questioned parents and teachers about these environmental degradations. Younger children may have processed what they heard differently. Many are asking librarians and teachers for books on the "polar bears and ice chunks" because they saw them on a news broadcast depicting rapidly melting glaciers in polar regions. This brief article describes how to best meet the needs of children for finding some answers with action-based activities, and how to provide them with a chance to experience activism for a noble cause--care for the environment.
