Growing and Supporting Instructional Leaders in the New Era of Accountability

The Redwood City (Calif.) School District, which comprises a diverse student population, has implemented a major professional development model for principals in order to enhance student achievement at all school sites. The model has three key components: (1) restructuring principal meetings with a primary focus on ongoing professional development, (2) offering mentors to new or struggling principals, and (3) providing ongoing support and monitoring of school sites by district administrations. These efforts focus on site meetings and visitations, classroom observations, and sharing of effective practices.
