Strategies for Physical Activity Promotion beyond the Physical Education Classroom
Faber, Larry; Kulinna, Pamela Hodges; Darst, Paul
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (JOPERD), v78 n9 p27-31 Nov-Dec 2007
The current need for physical activity has extended beyond the limited time given to students in physical education classes. In order for students to receive appropriate levels of physical activity (i.e., at least 60 minutes per day), it is necessary for physical educators to incorporate physical activity opportunities outside the traditional class setting. The purpose of this article is to discuss several strategies that can be used to help bridge the gap between physical education in school and physical activity and healthy behaviors outside of school. These strategies include (1) eliciting classroom teacher cooperation, (2) using national incentive programs, (3) creating a school incentive program, (4) using journal logs and homework, (5) developing or expanding after-school programming, (6) modeling healthy behaviors, and (7) getting the community involved. The school itself can also help by (1) installing age-appropriate playground equipment and age-appropriate semistructured play areas, (2) adding walking and jogging clubs and other recreational activities, (3) expanding family nights to include physical activity, and (4) providing healthy food options.
