Maximizing Safety, Social Support, and Participation in Walking/Jogging/Running Classes

Physical education instructors who teach high school or college walking/jogging/running classes, or who include walking or running as a segment of a wellness class, face a particular challenge in trying to meet each student's individual fitness needs while ensuring safety. This article provides strategies for effectively meeting individual needs and providing safety despite large class numbers and the wide range of fitness and health levels among class participants. It also provides tools and organizational advice for physical educators to foster social support, exercise adherence, and optimal fitness development for each participant, as well as tools for health screening, methods to ensure appropriate shoe selection and fit, a checklist of exercise warning signs, methods to determine pace, guidelines for a log book, and information about how to create a supportive, safe environment.
