Moral Dimensions of Educational Decisions: The Essential Place of Values-Rich Curricula in the Public Schools
Etzioni, Amitai
School Administrator, v65 n5 p22-25 May 2008
There is a widely held notion that public schools should not teach values. In effect, schools do. In addition, there is probably no significant decision that a school administrator or classroom teacher can make that does not have a normative dimension. In this article, the author discusses how teachers are often not aware that they are imposing normative education on students when they choose books and materials for use in classrooms. He also discusses that character education should not be taught under authoritarian conditions. He also discusses the value of school experiences in building students' moral commitments. For teachers to be more than purveyors of information, the author suggests that they must bond with students by arranging for less rotation of pupils.
