Medicine Ball for All: A Novel Program that Enhances Physical Fitness in School-Age Youths
Faigenbaum, Avery; Mediate, Patrick
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (JOPERD), v77 n7 p25-30, 45 Sep 2006
This article provides an overview of medicine ball training. Specifically, it describes "Medicine Ball for All," a physical activity program designed to provide children and teenagers with a meaningful learning experience that is consistent with their developmental needs. The article focuses on developing a safe, successful, and inexpensive physical activity intervention for school-age youths using medicine balls. This novel program consists of a variety of medicine ball exercises designed to improve physical fitness, enhance self-confidence, and increase sensory awareness through visual, auditory, and tactile stimulation. Instead of isolating fitness components, "Medicine Ball for All" integrates strength, power, flexibility, endurance, agility, balance, and speed into one creative program. The article summarizes the results of a research study designed to assess the effectiveness of the "Medicine Ball for All" program. That study (further detailed in EJ768178) found that the study group participating in a medicine ball training program made significantly greater gains in all fitness tests compared to the control group. With the current focus on physical education programs to develop and enhance health-related fitness, physical competence, and positive attitudes about physical activity, "Medicine Ball for All" activities can be a worthwhile addition to any physical education program.
