Measuring Temperature: The Thermometer
Chamoun, Mirvette
Australian Primary Mathematics Classroom, v10 n2 p30-32 2005
The author discusses the historical development of the thermometer with the view of helping children understand the role that mathematics plays in society. A model thermometer that is divided into three sections, each displaying one of the three temperature scales used today (Fahrenheit, Celsius and Kelvin) is highlighted as a project to allow students to compare systems of temperature measurement used in society and to recognize similarities and differences of each scale. Such a "discovery-like" process is advocated as important for mathematical understanding to occur in a meaningful knowledge context. (Contains 1 figure.)
