Higher Education Trends and Opportunities
Cronin, Joseph M.
Connection: The Journal of the New England Board of Higher Education, v20 n5 p18 Spr 2006
Most people in higher education believe in continuity, in respecting traditions. That makes it easy to miss the startling changes and compelling opportunities that confront the academic enterprise. In this article, the author presents a few trends that are dramatically altering higher education in New England: (1) more women than men are attending college; (2) Hispanics are the most rapidly growing ethnic and racial minority in New England; (3) the number of students taking online courses has risen; (4) the number of students earning science and engineering degrees has decreased; and (5) for-profit universities are gaining market share.
