Declaring Independence: A New Model for Public Presidents
Carothers, Robert L.
Connection: The Journal of the New England Board of Higher Education, v19 n2 p17-18 Fall 2004
Increasingly, leaders of public colleges and universities around the country are faced with the challenge of fulfilling their missions in the face of continuing disinvestment by the states. In this article, the author discusses how public colleges and universities will adapt to a model in which they are expected to supply their own operating revenues while continuing to serve their states and nation for the greater public good. He suggests that today's leaders in higher education will have to abandon the defense of financial entitlement and instead shift their focus to gaining the financial and management independence required to maintain the viability of their institutions.
