Fernandez, Maria L.; Schoen, Robert C.
Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, v13 n9 p500-512 May 2008
Mathematics teachers can tap into students' curiosity about hurricanes to develop their understanding of mathematical ideas within a real-life context. This article discusses hurricane-based mathematics tasks involving cooperative learning that were found to help students enhance their understanding of patterns, graphs, and rates of change. For teachers, these hurricane-related task provide a context to expand their thinking about the use of multiple approaches and representations for solving mathematical problems, and encouraged their thinking about pedagogical strategies for effectively engaging students in cooperative learning. (Contains 6 figures, 2 tables, and a classroom activity sheet.)
