10 Ways to...Welcome a New Teacher
Rust, Jayna
Instructor, v115 n2 p27-29 Sep 2005
As a two-year "veteran," the author remembers well how much a little moral support and a smile can mean for a newly-minted teacher. It kept her going in those first few exhausting, confusing weeks. Building those connections is vital both for new teachers and for their profession. With so many new teachers leaving after just a few years (over 50%!--according to the latest figures), schools should all be putting out the welcome mat. In this article, the author offers 10 ways to make new teachers feel at home: (1) Cool off before starting up; (2) Give a gift of appreciation; (3) Listen to them; (4) Show them the sights; (5) Welcome their families; (6) Thank Fridays (and new teachers); (7) Have a happy hour; (8) Volunteer your expertise; (9) Make them newsworthy; and (10) Host a lunch club.
