Diverse and Creative Uses of Cases for Teaching
Patton, Michael Quinn
New Directions for Evaluation, n105 p91-100 Spr 2005
The purpose of this concluding chapter has been to stimulate creative thinking about how to use cases for evaluation teaching and training. The preparation of professional evaluators presents special challenges. Imaginative new teaching and training resources are appearing, as evidenced by the special sections on evaluation teaching that now appear regularly in the "American Journal of Evaluation". Preskill and Russ-Eft's recently published and wonderfully stimulating book, "Building Evaluation Capacity" (2004), offers seventy-two creative and tested activities for teaching and training. This volume on using cases for teaching evaluation aspires to contribute to professional excellence in evaluation by grounding training in real-world experiences captured and presented in detailed cases. Case teaching and the additional practice-oriented teaching ideas presented in this chapter seek to bridge the gap between knowing and doing.
