Lessons through Grief: What Textbooks Can't Teach
Rothenberger, Sara B.
About Campus, v9 n4 p28-29 Sep-Oct 2004
The author, a residence life coordinator, shares her journey through the grief process as she coped with the death of her father. While our culture teaches us to mourn privately, she decided to grieve by letting her story and experience serve as an example for her staff and students. She chose not to allow her father's death to become a taboo subject for the people around her. She began by allowing them to care for her and to check in with her even though it sometimes felt like role reversal. When appropriate situations arise with students and staff, she shares her experience because it helps them to understand that she has shared a similar experience. It also helps her to have found a way in which her father is still active in her life. In his physical absence it is comforting to know that he is guiding her in helping others.
