REMEDES (Researching Methodologies in Deaf Studies)
Young, Alys; Turner, Graham
Deafness and Education International, v6 n3 p173 Oct 2004
March 2004 saw the last in the ESRC-funded REMEDES seminar series. Its focus was research methodologies and problems of method in working within D/deaf studies. Its start point was to question whether there were conditions, characteristics and features of the field that present particular challenges and/or drive particular kinds of methodological innovation, e.g. languages in multiple modalities, competing paradigms of deafness, technological advances, competing definitions of what it is to be D/deaf, ethical and political responsibility and so forth. From this starting point both experienced and younger researchers from across the UK and Ireland met over a period of two years to share specific research work, and to ponder more overarching issues. The final seminar was residential and was joined by two colleagues from the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). Integral to the success of the series was the involvement of research students for whom the series provided both training and mentoring opportunities.
