Moving Assessment beyond University Administrators and Faculty: Creating a Program Evaluation Research Team with Graduate Students
Farmer, Yvette
Assessment Update, v17 n6 p1-2, 11-12 Nov-Dec 2005
One of the author's first assessment experiences at California State University, Sacramento, began when she was assigned to teach a graduate-level program evaluation research course in the Division of Criminal Justice. The chair of the assessment committee and the division chair approached her with the idea of conducting an assessment of the criminal justice division as a research project for the course. They made it clear that such a project would satisfy an assessment goal for the division and would provide students with hands-on research experience. In this article, the author describes how she conducted this program evaluation research project for assessment purposes. The students received valuable knowledge and experience by doing actual research; the Division of Criminal Justice was further informed about student perceptions and reminded that students and faculty can work together to meet administrative mandates; and she was reminded that hardworking students combined with division support can help faculty turn assessment challenges into rewarding teaching and research experiences.
