Assessment Measures: Using Surveys of Entering Students in Assessment Research
Pike, Gary R.
Assessment Update, v16 n6 p14-16 Nov-Dec 2004
Mississippi State University is participating in a pilot test of the Beginning College Student Survey (BCSS), the newest addition to the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). The BCSS is designed to provide information about students' experiences in high school and expectations for college and parallels NSSE's premier survey of college student engagement, the College Student Report. In this article, the author provides brief overviews of three entering student surveys and concludes with several recommendations for using these surveys in conjunction with more familiar student experience surveys. These student surveys include: (1) Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) Freshman Survey; (2) College Student Expectations Questionnaire; and (3) Beginning College Student Survey.
