One Way to Rein in the Cost of Textbooks: Make Them Free
Delespinasse, Paul F.
Chronicle of Higher Education, v54 n23 pA38 Feb 2008
The prices for college texts have soared way beyond inflation for the last quarter-century. As such, they have become a burden on today's financially strapped students. From the point of students and of faculty members who are concerned about their students' welfare, the important question is what can be done to drive text prices back down. In this article, the author argues that there is no justification for the high prices of textbooks with the availability of modern technology. He suggests that academics should help ease students' burdens by putting unpublished monographs online and making them free.
