Bridging a Successful School Transition

Everybody knows that children's exposure to learning opportunities prior to age 5 has a profound and lasting effect on their success in school and beyond. Each fall, millions of children enter kindergarten; some of those 5-year-old children have a preschool education experience and some of those children do not. To ensure a child's learning success in kindergarten, early childhood educators and parents must work together and provide skills and experiences that best prepare children for the rigors of the school environment. How does one facilitate a smooth school transition? In 2006, the author and her colleague were awarded a Ready School grant from Indiana Family Social Services Administration. The grant was implemented in 2007 as Bridging for Effective School Transition (BEST), intended to establish a collaborative partnership among higher education institutions, school districts/corporations, early childhood programs (including Head Start, child care centers, family child care providers, and faith-based preschool programs), community organizations and agencies, and parents. The goal was to achieve "Ready Child, Ready Schools, Ready Parents, and Ready Community" and thus provide bridges for effective school transition, giving children a good start in the hope that they will stay ahead and finish first. Project BEST identified four objectives. The first objective was to ensure "Ready Child" by increasing pre-K educators' knowledge and skills in terms of strengthening child care environments and implementing developmentally appropriate practices for the young. The second objective was to ensure "Ready Schools" by working with school districts/corporations to facilitate "Countdown to Kindergarten" activities, arrange kindergarten teachers' visits to preschool/child care centers, and create a brochure and DVD to provide early childhood educators and parents with important information on the transition to school. The third objective was to ensure "Ready Parents" by organizing "Community Forum" sessions to provide parents with information on the importance of early learning and school readiness and to find ways to help and assist their children's growth and development. The fourth objective was to ensure a "Ready Community" by offering professional development training to pre-K educators to improve their knowledge and skills in providing quality programs to young children and support parents of children in impoverished households. Thus, in this article, the author provides some ideas that are crucial for the effective implementation of a school transition program.
