Fixing the Net Tuition Revenue Dilemma: The Dickinson College Story

This chapter describes how Dickinson College, guided by a strategic plan, addressed its net tuition revenue problem through effective decision support, marketing and branding approaches, and pricing and financial aid strategies. The college's strategic plan guides allocation of resources toward fulfilling the college's purpose of providing an education that is "intellectually comprehensive, rigorous and ultimately useful:" establish an average discount rate (financial aid grants as a percentage of tuition) that maximizes net tuition revenue while supporting access and diversity initiatives; improve giving, both to the annual fund and to the endowment; identify operating efficiencies; and explore net-revenue-positive entrepreneurial initiatives that align with the college's mission.
