Learning about Primes

In this article, the author relates his unhappy experience in learning about prime numbers at secondary school. To introduce primes, a teacher first told students a definition of a prime number, then students were taught how to find prime numbers. Students defined and listed them and at some later point were tested on their memory of both the definition and the list. However, the author finds this approach frustrating and a waste of time for students. This unhappy experience caused the author to consider a different approach when he ended up teaching the same topic as a new maths teacher. Here, he describes a teaching approach to prime numbers which does more than just define and list them. (Contains 6 figures and 5 notes.)
