Transforming the Spirit of Learning: From Kindergarten to College
Bowden, Shelly Hudson
Kappa Delta Pi Record, v39 n4 p183-185 Sum 2003
In this article, the author shares the lessons she learned about teaching when she left her kindergarten classroom for a college classroom. She relates how she initially experienced disequilibrium between her personal practical theories about teaching and learning and her actual practice as a new college teacher. She relates that she recreated her personal beliefs and practices as a former kindergarten teacher in her new role as a college teacher by adhering to her three core beliefs: (1) Students should contribute to planning, learning, and self-evaluation; (2) Students must be immersed in and given time to practice the knowledge they are learning in a safe, risk-taking environment; and (3) Students and teachers must have and build upon common respect.
