The AppleCorps: An Alternative to Young Teens Home Alone

Exchange: The Early Childhood Leaders' Magazine Since 1978, n180 p38-40 Mar-Apr 2008
Ten years ago when the first group of children aged out of the Applewood Learning Center's (Londonderry, New Hampshire) school-age child care program, parents asked the program to find a way to serve their young teenage children so that they would not be left home alone for the summer. The teens had friendships based on many years together in the program, but were not eager to continue receiving "child care" services. Since they were not old enough to be hired by the center or other local employers, and since other opportunities in town for young teens were limited or non-existent, the Learning Center's director established AppleCorps, a summer program for 14 and 15 year olds (which has grown to include 13 year olds). The AppleCorp teens work in the Learning Center, becoming "extra hands" to help with activities and jobs. Teens volunteer in the program and parents pay a minimal fee to cover the cost of uniform shirts. The teens must complete a written application, commit to volunteering for four weeks, participate in an orientation session to learn the basics of working with young children, meet with the Head Teachers to learn classroom responsibilities, and agree to be assigned to a classroom without their friends so that they interact with the younger children rather than with each other.
