Technical Studies Lead to Dream Career
Suraci, Gary
Tech Directions, v67 n8 p17-18 Mar 2008
Like many young men, Ty Kropp had no idea what he wanted to do when he graduated from high school. Courses he took as a computer design/manufacturing (CDM) technology student at the Ulster County Career and Technical Education center in Port Ewen, NY, gave him valuable skills that opened the door to his dream job at Orange County Choppers (OCC), a premier builder of motorcycles that is highlighted weekly on the TLC television series "American Chopper". In his job at OCC, Ty puts his skills to work daily in a fast-paced shop that builds motorcycles for some of the most recognized names in the United Sates, including Coca-Cola, Microsoft, and even the U.S. military. In this article, the author presents Ty's story. The author thought that technical educators might find his story interesting--and illustrative of the potential value of high-quality technical education.
