Imagine No Restrictions: Digital Rights Management
Houghton-Jan, Sarah
School Library Journal, v53 n6 p52-54 Jun 2007
The Digital Rights Management (DRM), a technology that allows copyright owners to regulate and manage their content when it is disseminated in a digital format, has sparked an escalating battle over copyright protection and fair use. The stakes are huge for content producers, consumers, and libraries. DRM is the reason why some patrons cannot access some of the downloadable digital content that libraries provide. This article discusses the three reasons why libraries should care about DRM. These reasons include device compatibility, DRM roadblocks, and archival issues. This article also provides a list of recommendations that library staff can use when they discuss DRM with users.
