Legislative Alphabet Soup: Federal Laws that Affect Your Work as a Library Media Specialist

Today, federal laws often seem like an alphabet soup with acronyms like CIPA (Children's Internet Protection Act), CTEA (Copyright Term Extension Act), ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act), YMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act), and NC LB (No Child Left Behind). These letters stand for federal laws about which library media specialists must have a basic knowledge in order to effectively fulfill their responsibilities. In this article, the author discusses some of the copyright laws, the children's INTERNET protection acts, and the laws that impact how students with special needs are educated in schools and how they use their school libraries.
