Bringing Authors to Students
Harvey, Carl A., II
School Library Media Activities Monthly, v22 n4 p28-30 Dec 2005
Traditional story times begin with "The author of this book is..." and "The illustrator of this book is...". Although library media specialists emphasize the role of an author and an illustrator in creating a book, students often have difficulty making the connection between the name and a real person. Learning involves making connections and having memorable experiences. Students may not remember doing worksheets, but they do remember the unique opportunities provided as part of their educational experience. An author visit is one of those events that students will remember and talk about long after they have left school. Author visits provide an opportunity to bring that name off the page and face to face with students. State standards require students to become strong writers and effective users of communication visuals, and hearing this advice from an author or illustrator often has more of an impact than hearing it from a teacher or library media specialist. In this article, the author offers suggestions for a successful author visit that make reference specifically to authors, but they are equally applicable to illustrators. (Contains 16 resources.)
