An Alternative Exercise for Generating a Dichotomous Key to Vertebrae
Gobalet, Kenneth W.
American Biology Teacher, v65 n9 p697-700 Nov-Dec 2003
Courses in Introductory Biology typically include a laboratory assignment in which students generate a dichotomous key. The exercise is designed to help students gain skills in observation, to recognize character differences, to develop vocabulary to communicate those differences, to understand the basis of either Linnaean of cladistic classification, and to appreciate the value of a key. Though keys can be manufactured virtually any category of tangible item, in the laboratory such ordinary items as thread, buttons, nuts, bolts, nails, and other fasteners are often used for convenience and user-friendliness. In this article, the author contributes an alternative exercise for generating a dichotomous key that uses vertebrae. (Contains 9 figures.)
