Developing Well-Rounded Teens
Curriculum Review, v47 n4 p7 Dec 2007
Unfortunately, the development of many life skills sometimes gets pushed aside in high school. The focus is on doing well in school and on getting to college. What about the learning that takes place in other arenas? Things like learning how to balance a check book or create a budget? These skills are just as important as those learned in the classroom. "97 Things to Do Before You Finish High School," by Steven Jenkins and Erika Stalder, encourages teenagers to explore, imagine and build self-esteem through fun, engaging experiences. Teenagers are challenged to take on endeavors such as organize a film festival, cook a three-course, balanced meal and learn the constellations--all before they graduate from high school. Traditional teenage activities such as watching the sunrise and getting a driver's license are also included. Activities are grouped by mission, making it easy for teens to develop well-rounded skills, in areas such as "For Your Personal Development," "Because You Should" and "To Get to Know the World Around You." Each activity includes an explanation of why it's important plus helpful ways to get started. This article presents three excerpts from the book.
