This article presents an interview with Susan E. Embretson. Embretson attended the University of Minnesota where she received her bachelor's degree in 1967 and earned a PhD in 1973 in psychology. She became an assistant professor at the University of Kansas in 1974 and was promoted to associate professor and full professor. In 2004, she accepted a professorship at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Embretson was awarded the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award (American Psychological Association, Division of Measurement, Evaluation and Statistics, 2001) and the Technical and Scientific Contribution Award (National Council on Measurement in Education, 1994-1996). She also received the Palmer O. Johnson award, with Ken Doyle, early in her career (American Educational Research Association, 1976). She has served as president of the Psychometric Society (1999), Society of Multivariate Psychology (1998), and American Psychological Association, Division of Measurement, Evaluation and Statistics (1991). Her current research directions include developing item response theory models, the measurement of change, automatic item generation, and validity issues in Internet testing. In an interview, Dr. Embretson shares her interest in the interface between psychometric models and cognitive psychology. (Contains 1 note.)
