School District Is Eloquent in the Language of Cultural Respect

This article takes a look at Dearborn school district, a district which has successfully educated English language learners (ELLs) with an emphasis on cultural respect for all its students. In Dearborn, where fifteen of its 33 schools have students populations of at least 50 percent ELLS, students are free to wear hajibs--head scarves. The district also makes community liaisons available to answer new immigrants' questions in their native tongues. The district's success has been thoughtfully planned, carefully monitored, and created from experiences of what didn't work, at least as much as what does.
