Intergenerational Grandparent/Grandchild Relations: The Socioeducational Role of Grandparents
Bernal, Jeronimo Gonzalez; Anuncibay, Raquel de la Fuente
Educational Gerontology, v34 n1 p67-88 Jan 2008
Intergenerational relationships established between grandparents and grandchildren have aroused great scientific interest in recent years. It is true that, nowadays, different studies have been conducted in which the typology of these relationships has been researched. Studies have used variables such as intra- and interindividual styles in the grand-parenting role, relationships after divorce, grandparents having to act as parents, or the type and quality of the established relationship when a grandparent becomes affected by a degenerative process. However, few studies provide evidence on the type of relationship and the roles that are established between the grandparents and their favorite grandchild. In this article, we aim to provide an overview of the studies that have been conducted on this subject. Subsequently, we present the main results of a study in which we analyzed the identification of the favorite grandchild and the relationships that were established. Our study took into account the presence of certain psychosocioeducational variables to enable us to improve our understanding of intergenerational relationships. (Contains 15 tables.)
