New Research Provides a Snapshot of Parents with Children Who Have Special Needs
Tillisch, Deanna
Exceptional Parent, v37 n11 p43-44 Nov 2007
Parents of children with special needs compose a community of kindred spirits. Sure, there are differences: Even when there are multiple issues involved, a family dealing with primarily medical challenges will have different concerns from another caring for a child with mostly developmental disabilities, behavioral issues, learning disabilities, or mental health concerns. There are some commonalities among parents of children with disabilities, too: a mutual sense of compassion and resilience come to mind, as do the shared concerns regarding care and planning for an uncertain future. This article presents a new research that provides a snapshot of parents with children who have special needs. Commissioned by Northwestern Mutual and conducted by the research firm, Market Probe, the research aims to learn the variety of concerns--both similar and different--parents of children with special needs have regarding their child's future, how they're addressing those issues, and the services and programs they wish were available.
