Neoliberal Ideology and the For-Profit Challenge to Community Colleges. UCLA Community College Bibliography
Liu, Amy
Community College Journal of Research and Practice, v31 n12 p1003-1010 Dec 2007
In the increasingly competitive and market-oriented educational environment, community colleges are not immune to the grasps of neoliberal ideology. As the neoliberal discourse of marketization, privatization, consumerism, and free enterprise spreads throughout higher education, are institutions in danger of transforming into nothing more than economic engines bereft of democratic ideals? The effects of neoliberalism on community college mission statements, curriculum, students, and faculty are some of the areas that the following references investigate. Additionally, with the rising tide of for-profit higher education, how are community colleges influenced or informed by this wave? Included in this bibliography are studies that examine how for-profit institutions compare and contrast with community colleges. The articles and studies cited in this article provide an ideal starting point for further personalized research on the impact of neoliberalism on community colleges and their responses to the for-profit challenge.
