Speaking Personally--With Susan C. Aldridge
American Journal of Distance Education, v21 n3 p165-171 Sep 2007
This article presents an interview with Dr. Susan C. Aldridge, the president of University of Maryland University College (UMUC) in the United States. Founded in 1947, UMUC is an accredited institution dedicated to providing working adults, military personnel, and students worldwide the opportunity to achieve their academic goals through online instruction, accelerated academic programs, and classroom-based courses taught during the daytime, evenings, and weekends. In this interview, Aldridge talks about how her prior career prepared her for her presidency in UMUC; the entrepreneurial focus that she brings to the job and how she responds to those critics of the market element which are creeping into the academy; and what the future is going to hold for higher education in the United States with all the challenges and growth of high-quality competition outside the United States.
