Bridging the Gap between Upper-Division Writing and German Studies Courses with Katja von Garnier's Bandits
Zinn, Gesa
Unterrichtspraxis/Teaching German, v37 n2 p117-131 Fall 2004
This article presents the implementation of Katja von Garnier's film Bandits into a composition course that focuses on writing strategies. It offers specific exercises geared toward the intermediate to intermediate high-writer on the ACTFL scale with an emphasis on the main characters in Bandits and female criminals in general. In providing helpful teaching tools, which include a sequence analysis of the film as well as exercises beyond the study of film, the article hopes to bridge the gap between intermediate and upper-division and/or German language and German studies courses. The author hopes that by incorporating tools from films studies into a language acquisition course, she will also help minimize the divide between (German) film and language studies.
