Minority Hiring Still Lags; New Standards May Help
Wolverton, Brad
Chronicle of Higher Education, v54 n10 pA34 Nov 2007
Every year the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport at the University of Central Florida issues a report on minority hiring in college sports. And every report says basically the same thing: White men continue to hold the vast majority of the most-powerful positions in intercollegiate athletics. This year's report echoes the findings from previous years--with one exception. For the first time, the biggest athletics departments are taking a radical step toward hiring more minority candidates. Last month athletic directors from the 120 largest football programs drew up new standards in an effort to improve minority hiring. The standards strongly encourage--but do not require--athletics officials to interview at least one minority candidate for every head-coaching vacancy in football. The guidelines will apply to other sports in future years.
