Engaging the Young to Experience God
Brochu, Barbara; Baragar-Brcic, Penny
Religious Education, v102 n4 p352-356 Sep 2007
In the way of Catholic Education, young people are engaged to experience God. Although the authors' reflections are written from the Catholic faith perspective, they feel the suggestions offered for educators to engage the human spirit could be extended to various faith communities or audiences. These suggestions were coalesced from their personal faith experiences, formal religious training, professional reading, professional experiences, and conversations, which led to the authors' shared understanding and praxis of their vocation as teachers and administrators. Their understanding is that the vocation of Catholic Education is metaphorically associated with "covenant." As educators seek to define the vocation of teaching for themselves, particularly the teaching of religious education, the authors suggest this begins with relationships and with a heart of service. Through the allegorical understanding of vocation as covenant used as a framework for discussion, the authors offer four focus areas along with pieces of practical advice for beginning religious educators. These are: (1) relationships; (2) experience; (3) covenant/tradition; and (4) role modeling. These focus areas are envisioned as quadrants within a circular configuration where the quadrants intersect and the circle has no beginning and no end.
