Preparing a Teacher for Management
Seidenfeld, Martin
Exchange: The Early Childhood Leaders' Magazine Since 1978, n178 p36-38 Nov-Dec 2007
When an owner or manager in the child care industry recognizes a worker who is very good at her job, she may consider promoting that worker into a management position. That can be a problem, while the superior worker may have had many years of practice at hands-on work, she probably has had very little--if any--training, in how to manage others. In this article, the author discusses three crucial principles which supervisors must inculcate in child care workers to help them move from being employees to being the managers of others. Becoming a manager is not easy, and many will not make the cut. By teaching and modeling these three crucial principles, supervisors will increase their odds of developing a truly successful manager.
