Iudin, V. V.
Russian Education and Society, v49 n9 p18-21 Sep 2007
In the past twenty years a generation has grown up that, unlike previous generations, was not the object of atheistic upbringing. In this article, based on sociological surveys of young people in Mogilev and Mogilev Oblast conducted in 2002 and 2004, the author examines the religious behavior of young believers and analyze the level and degree of their religiousness. The surveys used standard methods, they covered 1,200 people who represent the main social and demographic groups of young people between the ages of sixteen and thirty. The object of the study consisted of Orthodox young people, inasmuch as the Orthodox faith is the predominant religion in Belarus today, and up to 80 percent of young people in Mogilev Oblast and in Belarus as a whole are affiliated with that faith. The total number of young religious believers who identify themselves with other faiths and religions does not exceed 6 percent of the total number of respondents.
