Recent Developments in Information about Programme Quality in the UK
Brown, Roger; Carpenter, Caroline; Collins, Roz; Winkvist-Noble, Lilian
Quality in Higher Education, v13 n2 p173-186 Jul 2007
There is general recognition that increased demand for information about programme quality has accompanied the nearly universal massification of higher education, the consequential pressures on public expenditure, and the associated requirements of greater accountability. The UK government has sought to respond to this demand by establishing an official web site (Teaching Quality Information) which contains the results of an annual survey of student views. This article describes how this response has evolved. It rehearses some of the general issues with information about programme quality. These include the lack of agreement as to what is meant by quality and how it is to be measured or assessed; the level of detail; and accessibility to non-experts. All of these are found to arise with the latest version of the web site. (The following are appended: (1) Public information about academic standards and quality of HE provision; and (2) Editorial Addendum to "Recent Developments in Information about Programme Quality in the UK.") (Contains 4 notes.)
