School and College Students' Attitudes toward Military Service
Shevtsov, V. V.
Russian Education and Society, v49 n7 p92-98 Jul 2007
In the past few years there has been a considerable increase in the number of conscientious objectors and people evading military service. In order to make the necessary administrative decisions, organize military and patriotic indoctrination, and provide for professional military fitness it is vital to have knowledge about attitudes toward military service held by young people in school. To determine more precisely what these attitudes are, the author carried out two sociological surveys: one covering school students in Tiumen during their period of field training assemblies based in the Avanpost specialized training center, and the other covering college students, based in five higher educational institutions in Tiumen--Tiumen State University, Tiumen Institute of Construction Engineering, Tiumen Medical Institute, Tiumen Industrial Institute, and Tiumen Institute of Agriculture. Findings showed that, over the span of twenty years, there has been a substantial increase in the number of school students and college students who take a negative attitude toward military service. Both groups say that the main difficulties of military service are: harassment, and the great physical, nervous, and emotional stresses. (Contains 2 tables and 1 note.)
