Art as Agency: Exploring Empowerment of At-Risk Youth
Wallace-DiGarbo, Anne; Hill, David C.
Art Therapy: Journal of the American Art Therapy Association, v23 n3 p119-125 2006
This report describes an art-based intervention program with at-risk youth that was inspired by the Project Self-Discovery model (Milkman, Wanberg, & Robinson, 1996). Twelve middle-school students from a small city in a mid-Atlantic state participated in the program. The program goals included making art in order to empower the participants through self-expression and community building. Complete data were obtained for six of the participants. The probabilities (not chance) that the program produced positive trends in change ranged from 70% to 80%. Two dimensions--attitudes and psychological adjustment--reached the highest probabilities (p = 0.078). The small sample size and the brief nature of the intervention (10 hours total) limited both the ability to generalize and the statistical power of the analysis.
