Voices of Experience: It Worked when I Started Small, Expanded Gradually
Slosson, Jim
Journal of Staff Development, v28 n4 p43, 46 Fall 2007
In this article, the author discusses how an instructional leader can overcome organizational inertia and create a genuine systemic change by starting small. To make a successful change, an organization must do the following: (1) Find the right staff and a powerful idea; (2) Provide a sponsor; (3) Start small; (4) Get results; (5) Find a cheerleader; (6) Expand gradually; and (7) Implement systemwide when the time is right. The author presents a case study that illustrates how a math teacher has successfully improved the mathematical skills of struggling students using a different teaching approach.
