Voices of Experience: The Image of a Wheel Just Clicked with Me

The author had been a high school English teacher for 15 years when her district transformed two traditional high schools into 10 small schools of choice. In this article, the author shares how the staff of one small school, with the help of professional development and a true sense of empowerment, created a small school culture and aligned the school's work to positively influence student achievement and learning. The author's school is a communications and technology school, made up of 22 teachers and nearly 400 students. When it opened in fall 2002, the staff decided that developing a school culture was their first task, to give their students a sense of belonging. In aligning the school's work to influence student achievement, the staff developed and implemented a model of total school alignment that they call "Spokes." They call the model "Spokes" because it is the ideas and the work that they implement that impact student achievement. The staff learned that by concentrating on school culture, they were also building a stronger learning community for themselves.
