Learning to Speak in a Political Voice
DeBlase, Gina
English Education, v39 n2 p117-119 Jan 2007
This past summer fifteen teachers from the Detroit public schools and the metro Detroit area participated in Wayne State University's first Invitational Summer Institute as part of the Wayne State Writing Project. As the director of a brand new National Writing Project site, the author was apprehensive about what she could expect from herself, the teachers, the co-directors, and the work they would do together over an intensive five-week writing institute. It was a new venture for them all. In this article, the author discusses one particular outcome of the Summer Institute, which is the evolution of the politics of voice in the lives of teachers. She believes that this outcome has implications for those who work with teachers.
